Fundamentals of Yoga Workshop
Saturday, February 20th, 10:30am - 12:30pm
Cost: $38

Are you new to yoga and are not sure what to do? Have you been to a yoga class and felt overwhelmed or intimidated because you didn't know what to do? Are you a yoga practitioner, but need some review on basic alignment and techniques? In this two hour workshop, we will explore some of the basic postures that make up the practice of hatha yoga. Students will leave with an understanding of appropriate alignment and technique, and will be prepared for most beginner and all level classes. This workshop is perfect for people new to yoga as well as for more seasoned students who want to review the basics.

Partner Yoga Workshop
Saturday, February 13th, 4-6pm
Cost: $43 per couple, or $25 per individual

Partner Yoga can be practiced by anyone. You do not need to bring a partner to participate. There will be plenty of partners available. Partner Yoga offers something unique to couples, parents and kids, and friends - imagine all the different partnerships in your life and enjoy a new level of play with your yoga practice!

Our Partner Yoga exercises will be a fun way to dissolve tension and establish a natural state of harmony in body, mind, emotion, and spirit, while enjoying your partner. Touch is seen as a basic human need that, in our modern busy lifestyle, is generally not satisfied. Partner Yoga offers us the chance to fulfill that need in a healthy way, while we explore fun poses together.

In the poses, partners will rely on each other's support to keep correct body alignment, balance, and concentration. In a deeper sense, this physical support fosters deeper feelings of nurture and acceptance. When you feel safe and supported you develop the courage to trust others and the strength to confront your fears and embrace your true self. Some poses challenge your balance, strength and flexibility, others require your total trust and surrender. Each pose uses the power of the partner to achieve more than one person could alone.

Gunas and Doshas: Asana for Self-Healing and Self-Realization Workshop
Sunday, 11/15, 12-3pm
Instructor: Aaron Price
Cost: $43

The Gunas and the Doshas represent ancient Ayurvedic systems of classification that help us to identify the fundamental nature of our being in this lifetime. They are the key to understanding who we are, both our basic constitution and our current condition. The Gunas and Doshas are, in large part, responsible for our experience of reality as we know it. Therefore, learning to practice asana that is appropriate to our Dosha and that properly impacts our Guna will, in turn, influences how we perceive and live our lives off the yoga mat.

When yoga practice is approached in this way, asana can become something far beyond what we know to be an extremely effective modality to move towards physical fitness. Rather, our yoga can take on a transformative power. We can come to a deeper understanding of a precise description of who we really are and then work to uncover that person, so that we move away from our current condition and towards our actual constitutional makeup, bringing us slowly but surely towards a place of fulfillment beyond what we thought could exist. Fear falls away, we become suffused with joy for living, and those things that bring us this pure and stainless joy become naturally and effortlessly attracted to us. Be begin to experience limitless self-realization and self-healing.

In this workshop we will perform systematic and comprehensive tests to determine each participants’  dominant Guna and Dosha. We will also engage in an in-depth discussion of the Gunas and Doshas, including definitions, the theories behind their existence, and the implications for the individual practitioner and their practice. We will then engage in an asana practice to demonstrate the practical side of these theories. Bring necessary materials for engaging in both lecture/discussion format as well as rigorous asana practice. Try not to eat after 10am.

Restorative Yoga for Power-Yogis
Sunday, 12/6, 12-3pm
Instructor: Aaron Price
Cost: $43

Many factors contribute to modern people becoming not only tired, but injured and sick. Yoga and Ayurveda consider all three, exhaustion, injury, and sickness, as being simply three different levels, or expressions, of the same thing: disease. As we approach a time of year that is not only increasingly hectic due to the holidays and year-end business, but also colder and therefore more challenging for the immune system, we need all the help we can get to make sure that we live joyful and fulfilling lives in spite of the whirlwinds that surround us. Unfortunately, if we are the types of yogis and yoginis that tend to look towards a rigorous asana practice as our safe haven in the stormy seas of the fourth quarter of the year, we may actually be tapping a dry well in the desert; what appears to be replenishing could potentially be doing us more harm than good.

Restorative yoga is not always gentle and relaxing during the actual practice. If the type of restorative yoga that you’ve experienced in the past doesn’t appeal to that power-yogi in you that yearns for a physical challenge, then this is the workshop for you. We will begin with a very short lecture and discussion of how we get depleted and the strategies for restoring our systems to full functioning. However, most of the workshop will be spent in long holds of poses that work to soothe the nervous system and bring healing energy to the body. We will also engage in an extended savasana during which we will practice a meditation called Yoga Nidra. Yoga Nidra is basically a guided meditation practiced entirely on the back while in savasana.

I can assure you that, although the restorative asana practice will be quite challenging, you will leave with a feeling of rejuvenation and healing that few people experience once they have left early childhood. Many people have found that, after only a few sessions of this particular practice, old injuries and dis-ease that they had come to believe they would never rid themselves of actually begin to fade and even vanish.

As always, please allow 3 hours to digest any food you’ve eaten before engaging in a yoga practice. Bring materials to take notes if you wish, and all your usual yoga practice accessories.

For assistance with questions regarding this workshop, contact Aaron Price via email at aaron@scendyoga.com

Maha Bandha Workshop – Correct Bandha use in Asana and Pranayama
Sunday, November 1st, 11:30am - 1:30pm
Instructor: Ricky Tran
Cost: $36.50 if registered by 10/26, $41.50 thereafter

Do you ever tilt your head in wonder when yoga teachers tell you to engage your bandhas or lift the pelvic floor?  Maybe you’ve never heard of the bandhas.  If so, then you’re not alone.  The bandhas are energy locks.  These bandhas regulate the flow of prana, or vital energy in the body and are key to some postures and the pranayama practice… but how are they used?

Spend 2 hours with Ricky Tran as he helps you find your bandhas and shows you how to use them in a yoga practice.  Correct use of bhandas can transform your practice instantly.  The first part will be spent practicing each of the three bandhas as taught by Ricky’s master teachers.  There will be about 60 minutes of yoga postures and 15 minutes of pranayama, or breathing exercises with an emphasis on the internal working of the bandhas.

This workshop is appropriate for all levels.  Beginners should come with a basic understanding of yoga practice.  Everyone will take their practice to a new level.

Padma handstand Lotus Workshop – Opening Workshop for Hips, Knees and Ankles
Sunday, September 20th, 12-3pm
Instructor: Ricky Tran
Cost: $41.50 if registered by 9/16, $46.50 thereafter

Are your hips tight?  Is it uncomfortable for you to sit cross-legged on the floor?  Have you fallen and can’t get up?  Tight hips, knees and ankles are some of the main reasons why adults fall and injure their hips.  Eliminating tension or dis-EASE in these areas can lead to a higher quality of life.  This 3-hour workshop is a vinyasa (variation) of asana (postures) intelligently linked together to progressively get deeper into the hips, knees and ankles for pain-free padmasana (lotus pose).  The more open these joints become, the less effort it will require you to sit cross-legged on the floor.  Once you can get into padmasana comfortably, you can work on visesha vinyasa (special/advanced variations), which will be demonstrated at the end.

This workshop is great for those who complement their running or cycling with yoga practice.  If you experience sciatica, this sequence will also help to prevent future pain.  Beginners are encouraged to come with a basic understanding of yoga terms.  This workshop is appropriate for all levels, especially teachers.

Celebration of the Spirit Guides - Going In-depth with Your Spirit Guides
Saturday, May 23rd, 3-10pm
Cost: $100 per person, or $80 per person if paid by May 15th

  • Discover and connect deeply with your Spirit guides
  • Renew your relationship with your Spirit Guides
  • Journey with your Spirit Guides to find connection, answers, power
  • Dance your Spirit Guides in and into your soul in a Moon Dance

Throughout time, people have connected to “unseen” beings that link us to all that is. Today, we often call them Spirit Guides, which are subtle, but powerful energies that come to us to help us awaken to ourselves and our universe. Guides come in many forms that make sense to us. They could come as animal, tree, stone, person or any other form that represents an energy that we need in our lives. In this workshop, we will journey for guides and journey with guides (like dreaming while awake), finally dancing them into our soul in a Moon Dance. These guides help us find answers, give us a real sense of different energies and awaken us to realities that often are dismissed in our culture, or are drowned out by all the chatter of everyday modern life. Ultimately, these Spirit Guides help us re-connect to ourselves and our own wisdom, and we remember and re-merge with them.

So join us …

We will remember our Spirit Guides. We will laugh with them. We will cry with them. We will explore with them. We will dance with them. We will never be the same as we celebrate and remember our old friends, the Spirit Guides. This is the year of doing the impossible.

Yoga for Cyclists and Runners
Saturday, May 16th, 2-4pm
Cost: $35

Balance your biking and cycling routine with a few simple yoga poses to prevent injury, strain and long-term damage, as well as improve balance and flexibility.

Bicycling and running are fast-paced sports, and it's easy to forget the value of slowing down to stretch after a long ride or run. Yoga can not only help prevent stiffness and soreness with great stretches, some poses can help you improve balance, posture and strengthen muscle groups that otherwise get "left behind" in a cycling or running regimen. This workshop was created to introduce you into a safe stretching regimen and to improve the fluidity of your sport.

Shamanic Journey - Come play with us in the Spirit World!
Saturday, May 2nd, 7-10pm
Cost: $20 at the door, $16 paid in advance
What to bring: Drums/rattles if you have them, bandanas are often helpful for beginning journeyers, a journal if you want to record your journeys, a sense of adventure.

Come play with us in the Spirit World. The shamanic journey is practiced throughout indigenous cultures worldwide and throughout time. The Mayans connect into the energies of the elements to seek visions, while other cultures use drumming, rattling and other sounds for the shamanic journey. Whatever the method, shamanic journeying is like dreaming while awake, or like riding the wind or a winged horse into the ethereal world.

Some cultures journey to three worlds, the lower, middle and upper worlds. In this system, overtime you develop an understanding of what these three worlds look like for you and also what information/help can be gained in each. Typically, the lower world is the place you travel to for animal guides, for information about plant medicine and a place to go for power. The middle world is a place where you can travel back in time and into the future. The upper world is where you will find the Spirit beings – those beings more typically considered Goddesses and Gods, etc. This is all a guideline and your experience can vary. It is always important to discover these shamanic realms for yourself, mapping them out.

Other cultures do not use these three worlds, but rather connect in with their guides and their guides will take them where they need to go in the Spirit worlds.

The most important thing in shamanic journeying is setting your intention. Your intention guides your journey and will ensure you’ll never get lost in the ethereal worlds. Your intention may be to get an answer to a certain problem you’re working through or it may be to find help for a friend or it may be to remember your core essence or it may be to recover power you’ve lost over time. Intentions are limitless.

You then work with your guides who will provide you answers that can come in many forms. You may see things like a movie or you may just hear things or you may just know the answer, or a combination of these. Many people are disappointed if they do not have a vivid, movie-like journey but the reality is if you have a sense of knowing without all the flashy pictures, you’re likely ahead of the game. Visions that include the visual symbolism must always be interpreted whereas a sense of knowing gives you immediate answers.

From the shamanic journey, you can dream new dreams you never thought possible before, returning magic to your life.

So join us …

We will remember our Spirit Guides. We will laugh with them. We will cry with them. We will explore with them. We will dance with them. We will never be the same as we celebrate and remember our old friends, the Spirit Guides. This is the year of doing the impossible.

Partner Yoga Class
Friday, April 18, 2008 7:30-9:30pm
Cost: $43 per couple, $23 per individual

Our Partner Yoga exercises will be a fun way to dissolve tension and establish a natural state of harmony in body, mind, emotion, and spirit, while enjoying your partner.

Touch is seen as a basic human need that, in our modern busy lifestyle, is generally not satisfied. Partner Yoga offers us the chance to fulfill that need in a healthy way.

Partner Yoga can be practiced by anyone. You do not need to bring a partner to participate. There will be plenty of partners available!

Partner Yoga offers something unique to couples, parents and kids, and friends.
For couples, practicing Partner Yoga is a great way to strengthen the relationship by fortifying trust and communication and deepening intimacy.

Classes start March 4 and will cost $15 drop-in or you can buy a 4-class pass (may only be used for this series) for $50 (with the exception of 3/25 and 4/22, see below). A very powerful experience, this class is a great way to try acupuncture as well as continue to enjoy the benefits of this extremely powerful healing modality.

About Shapeshifting
This meditation series will focus on shapeshifting/transforming your life, your energy, your beliefs, and your way of walking in the world. Each class will focus on one of the seven windows or portals into shapeshifting your life.

With war raging on around the world, the Earth choking on polluted water and air, and more and more people sinking into depression, there is no better time than now to raise the consciousness of ourselves, our communities and our planet. Many cultures have predicted this time of change we are in. Ancient Andean traditions, for example, say we are in the Pachacuti, a time of testing where we will see if the Eagle (the masculine, Western head energies peoples) can once again fly in the sky with the Condor (the feminine, indigenous heart energies peoples). Each of us personally also struggles with balancing the Eagle and Condor energies within. For too long, we have learned how to separate into loneliness and despair, how to separate into groups of hate and exclusiveness, how to separate our head from our heart.

Today is the time to begin (or continue working on) finding our oneness with ourselves and all things in the universe. By discovering our mission of why we have decided to be born into this world at this time, increasing our awareness of self, others and the universe, and by removing any barriers, we can live happier lives, making a difference in our communities.

We begin with awareness:
March 4: Connect into your self-awareness, learning to walk in the world, aware, rather than walking by the world, not noticing.

March 11: Remember your mission, which will set you on a new course in life or give a boost to your current path.

March 18: NO CLASS

March 25: Re-discover your core self, peeling away the onion layers that have kept you from feeling the power of your core self.

April 1: Connect to Arutam, the fifth element, ether, or the Goddess/God or Spirit element that permeates, animates all things.

April 8: Reincorporate spiritual sensuality, feeling the dualism of body and Spirit slip as you experience how body and spirit work together to help you relate to self, the planet and other people; separation fades; oneness emerges.

April 15: Revamp your relationships, beginning to communicate at the heart level with rocks, plants, animals and other humans.

April 22: Move into community, by learning that as you shift, you will help shift those around you.

This program is based on the teachings of John Perkins, founder of Dream Change, a grassroots group dedicated to changing the dream so that we all may live in peace on this planet. John is also author of several books, including The World is as We Dream It, Shapeshifting and NY Times Bestseller Confessions of an Economic Hit Man.

Come for one, or join us for all seven meditations!

Restorative Yoga Workshop with Cheryl Thomas
February 24th, 2008 12-2pm
Cost: $35

The focus of this gentle practice is to create a foundation of mental, emotional and physical relaxation that resonates into all aspects of your life. Through supported poses, breath awareness and simple meditation techniques, we'll restore health and vitality to the body and mind. From this still place, the body is more able to access its natural ability to cleanse, heal, rest, sleep, grow, conceive and build immunities. This workshop is open to yogis of all backgrounds, levels, sizes and ages. No yoga experience is necessary.

What is Restorative Yoga
Restorative Yoga focuses on relaxing the body in restful, supported postures. Note that 'rest' is different than sleep. Rest provides the body an opportunity to renew and heal.

What You'll Experience
We know that stress can make us sick. In this workshop we'll discuss the causes of stress and how the body reacts to stress. Then we'll practice supported yoga poses that allow the body to "rest deeply" bringing the body back into equilibrium and giving it the opportunity to heal itself.

This will be one of the most important practices of yoga you'll experience. Give yourself this unique opportunity. Your body and mind will thank you.

Cheryl Thomas is a 500-hr. Yoga Alliance member and a yoga instructor in San Francisco and Dallas. She is certified in the Relax and Renew method by Judith Lasater. Along with her yoga teachings, she holds a certificate from the Institute for Holistic Health Studies at San Francisco State University and is trained yoga therapist.

Circle of Seekers: Dancing with Chi

We had our first Dancing with Chi journey and it was alot of fun. We started with some movements to awaken our chi (energy) and then began to feel the chi as if it were a tangible object. We then moved on to explore other peoples chi, feeling the warmth, and magnetic force between two beings . It was a very open circle with room to express what you were experiencing at any given time.
